Obituary for Adeline Nickens

Adeline Bundy Nickens was born on June 19, 1947 to the late Lonnie Bundy and Etta Richardson Bundy in Essex County, Virginia. She was called to rest on July 2, 2019. Adeline accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age.
She was educated at Essex County High School in Tappahannock, Virginia. She met and married Herbert Nickens in 1968 which resulted in 51 years of marriage. Their anniversary took place on July l; and unfortunately, Adeline passed away on July 2, 2019

After high school, Adeline worked for the U.S. Department of Defense She left the DOD after a brief employment to join her husband who was a member of the U.S. Army and was stationed in San Francisco at the time. While in San Francisco, she began working in the insurance industry. Upon her return to the District of Columbia, she gained employment with Guardian Life Insurance Company where she remained for 36 years. Guardian Life Insurance Company sold medical, dental, disability, group and long term life insurance policies. The Director of Guardian, John O' Callahan, was so impressed with Adeline's dedication, thoroughness and hard work that he made her his assistant. At Guardian, her responsibilities were to teach, train, hire and fire as well as set up new offices in DC and Maryland. Even though she was not a sales representative, she sold million dollar polices and credited the sales staff. She retired from Guardian but went to work for Alston Insurance, a local company, shortly thereafter.

Adeline joined Canaan Baptist Church in 1983 where she was an active member. She loved Canaan and her Pastor. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for Canaan if asked. She was a Finance Committee Member, a Seniors on the Move Member and a dedicated Trustee until her health began to fail. She volunteered to help any ministries that needed assistance.

Adeline was a woman of strong faith who read her Bible and her Daily Word every day. She believed in the power of prayer and prayed multiple times day and night.
She was an excellent cook who shared her delicious potato salad, macaroni salad, cheese dish and pound cake made from Heaven's bounty. Her recipes had everyone waiting and standing in line. In addition, Adeline and Herbert traveled to Alaska, Bahamas, Bermuda, Hawaii, Mexico, New Orleans and Switzerland.

Adeline leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 51 years Herbert; sisters Kate Smith of Washington, DC; Jean Pugh of West Point, VA; Mary Ann Taylor (Rev. James Taylor) of Penns Grove, New Jersey; Jennie Holmes of Pine Grove, NJ; Lola Rulo (John) of Penns Grove, NJ; brother, Dan Bundy of Las Vegas, NV; Sister-in-Law Rosalie Nickens Moore of Alexandria, VA; and Herbert's twin brother Rev. Dr. John W. Nickens (Sharon) of Alexandria, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Lonnie and Etta Bundy and her brother Lonnie Bundy Jr.
Her favorite saying was, "Only what you do in Christ will last."
