Obituary

Anthony Byron Mines, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, was born on July 5, 1956, to the late Walter A Mines Sr. and Evelyn J Mines. He suddenly departed this life on March 29, 2025, at his home.

Anthony was raised in Hanover County and attended Patrick Henry High School. He accepted Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beaverdam, VA. Although Anthony was not active in the church, he loved the Lord and had no problems telling you so.

Anthony was known to his family and friends as Tony or Tony Simms.

Anthony attended Patrick Henry High School. He was employed by Jones Lumber Company until the age of 62 and prior to Jones's, he worked at Ashland Nursing Home.

Tony Simms was a kind but straight-shooter. You knew exactly where you stood with him. We often wonder how he had any friends the way he spoke to them, but it was their love language. Tony enjoyed life to the fullest; he enjoyed his spirits and his friends. He was a Pittsburg Steelers fan, and he enjoyed listening to Lee Williams on Sunday Mornings and watching Little House on the Prairie. He really was not fond of Nellie Olsen.

He never complained; he was a simple man. He enjoyed cooking but especially cooking for others. Rabbit was his favorite food. He assisted with the care of his Aunt Geneive until his health began to fail him. He could not stand for long periods, but he continued to cook meals, sitting down and ensuring he shared them with her. He enjoyed shopping only at Rose's because they had good candy.

Anthony is preceded in death by his daughter Tamirria Mines, his brother Gregory Mines, his niece Tameca Mines, and his mother Evelyn Mines.

He is survived by three children, Anthony Mines, Andrea Mines, and Samaj Mines; three grandchildren, Demetris Carter Jr, Danielle Carter, Devin Carter and a great-granddaughter Tamirria Carter; four brothers, Walter Mines Jr, Rev. Kelvin Mines Sr (Cathy), Alonzo Johnson, Anthony Starke, five sisters Marzetta Mines, Jacqueline Shelton and Deborah Mines, Ann Threat (Terry), Cathy Nelson (Roger) and Jennifer Starke(Leland) and one Aunt, Barbara Mines, Devoted Cousin James (Whis)Mines, and devoted ex-wife/friend Pamela Hunter.

Devoted friends Leon Clarke, Ward Wyatt, Michael Tyler, Wayne Robinson, and Calton Smith. A host of nieces and nephews who he loved dearly and other family and friends.
