Bernice E.
Winston
Oct 13, 1938 — Aug 18, 2026
Mechanicsville
Bernice Elizabeth Winston was born on October 13, 1938, at MCV Hospital to Mark Hill and Margaret Elizabeth Winston. She attended Richmond Public Schools, including Baker Street School. At the age of 16, Bernice relocated to New York eventually moving to New Jersey and at age of 33 she returned home to Virginia at her mother's request to raise her younger siblings.
Bernice devoted much of her life to caring for others. She had a long nursing career, including 25 years of service at Straford Hall. Her heart for nurturing extended far beyond her profession: for more than 45 years, she served as a foster mother, opening her home and her heart to children who needed love, guidance, stability, and family.
She was known for her excellent cooking - especially those unforgettable sweet potato pies and her famous chopped barbecue she made during the holidays - talking on the phone, shopping, opening her door to family members, and helping raise children across generations. Bernice was truly a mother to many and a legacy to all. Her life was marked by service, generosity, family, and a love that will continue to live through everyone she touched.
