She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, McKoy E. Johnson, and her six brothers: Broaddus, Horace, Leslie, Robert, Raymond, Nelson, and one sister Reverend Nellie Bea Winston.

She attended the public schools of Hanover County and graduated from John M. Gandy High School in Ashland, Virginia. During this time, she worked with her Father in the Richmond, Virginia area. Dear Summer, From the day I met I you instantly fell in love with my Dear Summer I enjoyed you from the Blooming Spring time to those hot sunny days, I loved the fried hot dogs and eggs for breakfast to the Breyer's Strawberry ice cream after dinner. From playing out back on the rickety basketball court to spending time with my big cousins. I had a childs dream from McDonald's everyday for lunch to KD all afternoon my Dear Summer was wonderful. My Summer was the best except when uncle McCoy tricked me into cutting the grass only to be relieved by my Dear Summer. Always a smile and the biggest hug when you seen me. How I will miss you reminding me the uncanny resemblance to my Father, the way you called me Juice & how Proud you were of the man I've become. I will cry tears of Joy until I see my Aunt Shirley (Dear Summer) again. With Love Juice.......

Auntie, I am truly going to miss you. So glad I got to spend time with you laughing and telling jokes. You was such a beautiful spirit and through the rough part you had a smile that could light up a room. Rest In paradise auntie. I love you. To my cousins. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I am here for you all night or day if you need me.

Lovingly known to us as grandma because she adopted all of us into her life, she greeted us with a "hello sugar", a big hug and a kiss. She paused when she shared a moment with you and made sure to ask about the kids and anything else you had going on. I and all who loved her and all whom she encountered are better people because of the love she shared. My favorite was when she'd ask me if I had any of my mom's homemade rolls stashed away for her...When she'd hold me cheeks in her hands and tell me how much she loved me and was proud of my husband and I... or took a moment to encourage my daughter and fuss over my son for growing up too fast. I will miss her greatly. However, I KNOW that I know that she is in heaven with the Lord. Prayers of comfort for the family. Let her legacy live on in us.
