Doctor P.
"Doc" Johnson
Jun 24, 1930 — Dec 20, 2025
Doctor P. "Doc" Johnson was born June 24, 1930, to the late William and Lillie Johnson. He was the fourth of nine children. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary C. Johnson, son Timothy Johnson, brothers William (Windor) Johnson, Alphonzo (Bug) Johnson, Howard (Tick) Johnson, Walter Johnson, sisters Shelia Clarke, Yvonne Clarke, Margo Thaniel, one daughter-in-law Mary Ann Johnson, and one son-in-law Eddie Raines.
He resided in Montpelier, VA and attended Hanover Public School.
He joined Bethany Baptist Church at a young age and kept his membership active after moving from the area. He served as a Male Usher at St. Peter Baptist Church for many years. He loved going to different churches and would divide his time with his wife's, and children's churches.
On November 26th, 1949, he married the love of his life Mary M. Clarke. From that union four children were born: Tyrone Johnson, Angela Johnson Raines, Timothy Johnson (deceased), and Anthony (AJ) Johnson.
In his early years, he worked at Kingan & Company, Hygrade Food Products Corporation, Pantry Pride, and Richfood Dairy.
He was a member of The Pride of Hanover Lodge 264 Masons for seventy-three years and 9 months.
Last year, he was honored for Father's Day at his church, and he also was the oldest male member of his church.
He had a passion for a beautiful lawn. He loved when people would compliment the way his lawn looked. When his sons took over the maintenance of the yard, he would often sit outside and watch. Probably looking to see were the sons doing it right or wrong.
He loved working on automobiles, lawn equipment, and anything else that had a motor. People often called him for his knowledge, when they had mechanical issues. His last major project was working on his loved 1948 Ford Jubilee Tractor, that belonged to his dad. At that point, he had to have one of his sons help him. When the tractor finally fired up, after weeks of trying to figure out the problems, they both were happy as could be. After that, from time to time, he would get the tractor started to just let it run. I think he took after his dad, who when he was sick, had someone to bring the tractor to his window so he could hear the motor purring.
When life presented him with his wife's challenges, he devoted his life to taking care of her until her death. He faithfully took care of her at home. He would stay with her in the hospital and rehab. He did not like it when they told him he could not stay overnight. His prayer was to be there until the end and God answered his prayer.
After his wife passed, he at ninety-two, was able to live alone, take care of himself, and do chores around the house. He had a lot of pride and rather do things himself. He hated to ask for help. His children would tell him ways to make life easier, and his famous words were, "I know", and "you're right", and that was his answers to please his children, but he had no plans to adhere to the offerings.
He was a great cook. Some of his favorite dishes were, mac and cheese, potato salad, corn pudding, candied yams, pies, and cakes. When people complimented his foods, his famous answer was, "it was okay". He always prepared big meals for Thanksgiving, and Christmas, until the last few years. He only stopped because he was invited out to dinner and had to be persuaded not to cook and go out to enjoy food and fellowship. He often told people that he was the only male in his Home Economics class in school. He learned his best cooking from trial and error, and his family had to suffer through the trials.
At his passing, he was the last of the original residents in his neighborhood.
He leaves to cherish his memories one daughter, Angela Raines, two sons, Tyrone Johnson, and Anthony (AJ) Johnson, one sister Janice Giles, one daughter-in-law, Dee Johnson, granddaughters, Alicia Davidson (Michael), Nicole Redd (Christopher), Christy Jones (Rev. Michael), Talicia Warren (Otis), and Shante' Coles (Arnold), grandson, Irvin Mitchell (Shwanda), a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, two devoted friends Johnnetta "JB" Kenney, and Greg Dunaway, and many other friends, and the watchful eye of the Glen Allen Community.
Special thanks go to Sheltering Arms Rehab, and Medi Hospice for their dedication, empathy, and for making our dad's journey as comfortable as possible. We will be forever grateful for the care, and love that you extended to our dad, and his family.
