Obituary for Dorothy M. Keys

Dorothy M. Keys (Dot) was the fourth child born to the late Henry B. and Eunice B. Keys. Dot entered the world on January 22, 1944 at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She attended D.C. Public schools graduating from Spingarn High School in 1962. Dot began her nursing career at D.C. General Hospital and later moved to East Orange, New Jersey, where she graduated from nursing school and continued in the field.

For four years, she worked at East Orange General Hospital. She worked for 28 years at University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey, retiring in the year 2000. Most of her years at University of Medicine and Dentistry were spent caring for babies in the hospital’s neonatal unit. After retiring, she continued to work part time at several local nursing homes.

She is most remembered and missed for her giving spirit, which began at an early age when she helped her parents care for her younger siblings and continued in her later years as she assisted in the raising of her grandchildren. After full retirement, she relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she spent much of her time visiting with her mother watching the day-time soap operas and sharing holidays together.

Dot is survived by her mother Eunice Keys of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two sons, Guy Lamont Keys and Efrim Keys-Muhammad, both of Newark, New Jersey; six sisters, Margie Thomas and Niamke Keys of Washington, D.C.; Ray Gilbert, Bonnie Keys, Burnette Keys, and Shirley Jackson, of Maryland; and Patricia Baskins of Fredericksburg, Virginia. She is also survived by her brother Charles Keys of Maryland, 11 grandchildren and two daughters-in-law. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She joins her father Henry Keys, two sisters Sarah Keys and Georgia Murchison, and three brothers, Carroll Keys, Gaines Keys, and Harold Keys in eternal rest.
