Obituary for Gale Valerie Moss

Gail Valerie Moss (Maxfield)

A devastating diagnosis found our family struggling with facing the inevitable loss of our dear sweet, loving, kind mother. Her greatest expression of love for her children was tested and she demonstrated true grace and courage through it all. She was determined to see all her children before she let the cancer beat her, her friends rallied around her and provided love and support to her everyday of her battle. On Dec. 28, 2018 pancreatic cancer took her life and left behind holes in our hearts that will never be healed.

Gail was born April 3, 1940, in Dover Foxcroft, Maine to John and Ruth Maxfield. As a child, she spent much of her time helping her father at, Wolverine Gear, a timing gear manufacturer, which he owned and operated. After high school, Gail attended Michigan State University where she completed her studies as an undergraduate, eventually earning a Master’s Degree in Teacher Education. Her first job in education was as a Home Economics teacher at Walled Lake Central High School, where she opened up the school’s first student-run cafeteria, “Central Station” as well as coached the cheerleading team. Additionally, she dedicated significant time helping run her family-owned restaurant in Drayton Plains, Michigan. Gail also spent time living in Texas where she opened two successful restaurants: Riverboat Annie’s and Bahama Bob’s.

Gail eventually purchased a home in Rockport, Maine and for almost 10 years Gail split her time between Vista, California and Rockport, Maine. She enjoyed being an active member of both the Rockport, ME and Coronado Yacht Club, a board member at the Reilly School in Rockport, ME, and the Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden in Humboldt, CA. She enjoyed going on long walks and started a walking group with her dear friends in Rockport ME.

Gail is survived by her children Karrie and Frank Runles, Kellie and Jerry Lanning, Larry Murphy and his wife Laura Roberts, and Terri Sutton (Bartlebaugh). Grandchildren Natali Runles, Chris Kauffman, Jake Lanning, Max and Lauren Murphy, Alex Falter and great-grandchildren Nathan Kauffman, Braden Murphy, Rylan Burlingham, and Trinity Burlingham. She was preceded by husbands Robert Bartlebaugh and Donald Moss.

Gail touched so many people and exhibited incredible caring and strength, always thinking of others, some of her last words spoke of this, “Humility – what others have brought into my life, my harbor; to learn, to love and to leave a legacy.” There will be a private service held in the summer of 2019.

The family requests in lieu of flowers please send donations to Tsunami Swimming of Fredericksburg, VA. in honor of Gail Moss. Donations can be made through the team website at: https://tsunamiswimming.org/honor-gail-moss
