Geneva "Jenny"
Coleman
Jun 29, 1949 — Jan 27, 2025
Geneva Johnson Coleman transitioned on the evening of January 27, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. The youngest of six siblings, she was born on June 29, 1949, to the late Marcellus Johnson and Martha Mallory Johnson.
Geneva, affectionately known as "Jenny," was raised in a loving home. Jenny accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She then joined Bethany Baptist Church in Montpelier, Virginia.
Geneva attended Hanover County Public Schools and graduated from John M. Grandy High School in 1967. Thereafter, she began her career in retail. Geneva dedicated many years to working for Best Products, Inc. until 1997, when the company went out of business. She was a homemaker full-time for a few years and later decided to return to retail to work part-time in the thrift business. Geneva's work priorities changed, and she became a devoted caretaker to her mother when her mother's health declined.
On July 5, 1975, Geneva was united into matrimony with her high school sweetheart, the late Rufus "Heavy" Coleman. They were married for 25 years before Rufus's passing in 2000. Although no children were born from this union, their warmth and kindness shone brightly in their special bonds with their nieces and nephews, offering unwavering support, guidance, wisdom, and love.
Geneva was known for her genuine compassion and generosity. She always made time to listen, lend a helping hand, share a heartfelt laugh, or provide shelter. Christmas was Geneva's favorite holiday. She found immense joy in decorating her home, preparing Christmas dinner, and welcoming family and friends with open arms. In her leisure time, she enjoyed baking pound cakes, gardening, watching movies, and entertaining friends.
In addition to her parents, Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus; brothers David and Lee Johnson; and sisters Lottie Franklin, Sarah Thomas, Betty Robinson, and Anastia Walker.
She leaves to cherish her memory three godchildren, Lamar Woody, Brittni Walker, and Regis Campbell; a sister-in-law, Edna Romeo; two brothers-in-laws, Leon Robinson and James Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, caretakers, and friends.
Geneva's warmth, strength, and love will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew her.
