Obituary for Gladys C. Woody

Gladys Clark Mallory Woody quietly entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 9, 2018.Gladys was born on July 9, 1928 in Hanover, VA. She was the youngest of six children born to the late Florence and James Mallory.

So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. (Romans 12:5) Gladys was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she served on the Senior choir, taught Sunday school and was Superintendent of both Bethany Baptist Church’s Sunday School and the Hanover County Sunday School Union. Always a proponent of higher education, Gladys finished her GED and boldly enrolled in a continuing education course entitled "Education for Leadership in the Black Church" at Virginia Union University, where her goal was to learn the foundations of Baptist doctrine.

But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24) Gladys’ life was a life devoted to service. She was employed as a Domestic for 35 years before becoming an Attendant at a local daycare facility. She worked the polls on election days and eventually retired from Senior Connections, where she served as a Facilitator. Perhaps, Gladys is best known for her community involvement. Her volunteer work included the Circle of Friends, which is a program of the Family and Children Services of Richmond. There, she regularly visited area nursing homes. As Coordinator of Transportation for the Western Hanover Committee for the Aging, Gladys faithfully provided transportation and hosted special programs during the year to share information on services and resources for older adults. It was there that she and “her seniors” often spent time making quilts, which was one of her favorite activities. A staunch supporter of the NAACP, Gladys was a local advocate of equal rights. As a member of the Eva M. Jackson 211 Chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars, she served as secretary and treasurer for many years.

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. (Psalms 127:3) Gladys loved to read her bible daily, write poetry and cook. She loved to thrift shop, watch CNN and loved the music of both Yanni and Prince. However, most of all, Gladys loved to talk. She talked about God. She talked about the importance of education and she talked politics. She often was asked to speak publicly in her community. However, most of all, Gladys loved to talk about her children (especially the Sheriff and the Lawyer) and her grandchildren. No matter what they did or did not accomplish, her progeny are the BEST, because they were hers.

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. (Proverbs 31:10) Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence T. Woody, Sr. She now leaves to cherish her memories six children: Patty W. Nicholas(John); Clarence T. Woody, Jr, (Clara); James R. Woody(Gloria): William B. Woody (Laura); Pamela E. Woody-Eaton(Dwight); and Priscilla R. Woody; twenty-two grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; “God son” Leroy E. Mines; several nieces, including Sandra Howard, nephews and friends.

I have wonderful memories of Sis. Gladys Woody from the days of the Montpelier Community Choir. She was inspiring for all of us in perfection and Goldy principles. I remembered how she would look over her reading glasses as she addressed the group. RIP

Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. May the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials be with this family during this most difficult time (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). From a very young age I was inspired by this lady, whose qualities taught me how to be a go getter no matter how severe the task.

To my Woody family, Miss Gladys will be greatly missed. When we would come to Bethany, she would always talk about her kids and grandkids and how much she loved you all and how good you all were to her. Know that you gave her the flowers she deserved while she was living and those great memories together will keep you doing this time of bereavement. Our prayers are with you.
