On Thursday, July 25, 2019, Gladys “Pudden” Louise Armstead entered eternal life with the Lord at Regional Memorial Hospital, Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Gladys was born in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Deacon David and Deaconess Frances Derricott.
She grew up in a loving home environment with twelve siblings of whom three (Dorothy, Alfred and Kenneth) are deceased. “Pudden”, as she was affectionately called by family and all who knew her, loved life and fellowship.
She was educated in the Caroline County Public Schools and a graduate of the prominent Union High School. She joined Oxford Mt. Zion Baptist Church and instantly became devoted to servanthood. She always had a deep desire to work in hospitality with her heart set on serving others. Her many jobs included: Jarrell’s Truck Stop (25+), Petro Iron Skillet, Hannaford Super Market, and Ukrops. Her cooking and baking skills were well known throughout Caroline County and the surrounding areas.
Pudden loved working in the Hospitality Ministry at church. She could prepare a large meal for any amount of people and could cook almost any dish. Fried chicken, corn pudding, and banana pudding were just a few of her favorites. She loved cooking for her Pastor and would frequently tell him, “She needed to put some meat on his bones.”
Gladys leaves behind to cherish her memory, four daughters, Brenda of Richmond, Virginia and Sheila, LaVerne, and Pamela of Ruther Glen, Virginia, seven grandchildren, Quianna, Quinton Sr., LaTasha, Javon, Courtney, Kendra, and Alexis, four great grandchildren, Quiara, Quinton Jr., Timera, and Ta’Neya, nine siblings, Helen Holmes, Floyd Derricott (Lelia), Evelyn Flowers, Reverend Ada Lee (Sterling), Joyce Henson (Charles), Frances Kirkland, Shirley Derricott, Linda Johnson (Van), and Faye Derricott, two sisters-in-law, Valerie Armstead and Mary Armstead Gray, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family, and friends. She was extremely fond of her cousin, Gilbert Minor, who was very much like a brother.
Gladys was a great inspiration to so many and we are very saddened by her passing. However, we still rejoice because she is forever with the Lord in his beautiful kingdom. She will be tremendously missed by all of us and is engraved in our hearts forever.
