Obituary for Glen "Snooky" Young

Glen Darryl Young or “Snooky,” as he was affectionately known, of Richmond, Virginia formerly of New York City, New York, peacefully slipped into eternity on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Snooky was born on September 6, 1954 in New York, New York to the late Ming Boon and Barbara L. Young. He was educated in the New York Public School System and graduated from Louis D. Brandeis High School in 1971.

After graduating from high school, he moved to Richmond, Virginia and chose to enlist and serve in the United States Army, during the Vietnam conflict, receiving an honorable discharge. Upon returning to civilian life, he began working in the United States Postal Services, until his retirement, with many years of dedicated service. Having the need to keep busy, he decided to work a part-time job until his health began to fail.

During his active life, Snooky practiced Tae Kwon Do and achieved the ranking of 2nd degree black belt. He also loved watching action movies and riding his bicycles and motorcycles on the open road. As a teenager, he was a member of the Army Cadet Rifle Team.

His cerebral side enjoyed strategizing on a chess board with other virtual players. And he loved to study astrology, as he was passionate about the mysteries and connections of the universe.

Snooky was best known for his quiet demeanor and his big, beautiful smile. When he was around family, he didn’t always initiate conversation, but he certainly contributed to talks involving relatives, sports and politics.

He loved being around his family, blending in the background, but would often quietly slip out without notice and someone would ask where is Snooky?? He’s gone!

Snooky received the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized. God never left him and was aware of his struggle and sent relief from his pain.

He can be admired by the way he received his diagnosis from the doctors and displayed so much strength realizing he had waited too long! God saw that he had suffered long enough and instructed the angels, who were always by his bedside, to accompany him home on Thursday, March 21, 2019 on Journey’s End Lane at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Medical Center. The Lord took him to the place where sickness, sorrow, pain, and death are locked out. Locked out forever are heartaches, frustrations, disappointments, disillusionment, and doubt. A place “where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. Only those enter there whose names are now written in the “Lamb’s Book of Life.” “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

He leaves to remember his smile and cherish their memory of him: a son, Glenn Young of Maryland, a devoted and loving sister, Diane Y. Moore of Glen Burnie, Maryland, a loving niece, Martise Moore of Los Angeles, California, three uncles, Willard Lewis (LaBertha) of Manning, South Carolina, Glen Lewis of Richmond, Virginia, Voon Yok Yow of New York, New York, and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
