Obituary for Helen Nelson

“I will lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” Psalms 121: 1-2

Helen Wilberta Fields Nelson was born on September 11, 1930 to the late Thomas and Wilberta Fields in Lorne, Virginia. She was the sixth of thirteen children born of their union.

Helen was educated in the Caroline County School System. She received Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and joined the St. Luke Baptist Church. She later joined the Mt. Oni Baptist Church and was a faithful member for 24 years until her passing. She served with the Willing Workers Ministry, and assisted the nutritional and mentoring program for children. Helen was a dedicated employee at Truckstop of America for over 31 years.

A soft-spoken, kind hearted person, Helen was beloved by her family, neighbors and church family. She loved going to church and cooking for her family and friends. Everyone loved her potato salad and pound cake. She also loved listening to gospel music and was especially fond of the songs sung by Mahalia Jackson. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she enjoyed decorating her home with Christmas lights (there could never be too many lights for her!).

Helen was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great faith in God and He richly blessed her for 88 years. On September 28th, after a short illness, Helen peacefully passed away at home, and went to her new home in Heaven to be with her Lord.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Calvin Roosevelt Nelson, Sr.; daughter June Wilson; son-in-law Floyd Wilson; sisters Jessie Snead, Barbara Anderson and Bernice Anderson; brothers David Sr.; Thomas Jr.; Timothy Sr.; and Jamie Fields.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Yvonne Sims of Ruther Glen, Calvin Nelson, Jr. of Alexandria; Wanda Greene (Leslie) of Ruther Glen; Linda Nelson of Ruther Glen; and Shelia Nelson (Kirk) of Glen Allen; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Fields (Gloria); sisters, Alice Dodson (Charles); Irene Clarke; Earlene and Geraldine Fields; one aunt, Fannie Woolfolk; one Brother-in-law, Charles Dodson; two sisters-in-law, Clarissa Fields and Gloria Fields; faithful friends and neighbors, Doris and Wilbur Thomas, and Laura Freeman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Bible gives us the wonderful prospect of seeing our loved ones again on a paradise earth. At Psalms 37:9-11 & 29, it gives us the hope of living forever on a paradise earth. It will be a time when Isaiah 33:24 will take place and “no resident will say ‘I am sick.” On this paradise earth, Rev. 21:4 promises us that “death will be no more.” I know this may not relieve your deep grief at this time, but please take faith in God’s promises.
