James Russell  Thomas, affectionately known by( Turtle) was A devoted father and beloved member of the Montpelier and Goochland communities, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, in Henrico Virginia. He was 82 years old.

Born on September 24, 1943, in Goochland, Virginia, James was the son of Marie Thomas (Walter) and James Wyatt From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. Though he began his education at Bethany School, life's challenges led him to enter the workforce early—a decision that would shape a lifetime of dedication and perseverance.
James began working at the age of 13 and built a long and varied career marked by resilience and commitment. Among his most notable roles was his time at Central Seeding in Montpelier. He later transitioned to a driving position at the North Anna Nuclear Distribution Power Plant. When the long commute became burdensome, he found lasting employment with U.S. Silica, where he worked for over three decades until his retirement. In addition to his primary jobs, James was known for his many side endeavors—bushhogging, lawn care, and other services that reflected both his industrious spirit and willingness to help others.

On April 13, 1968, James married Sarah Johnson. Together they raised three children: Rochelle Thomas, Spencer  Thomas, and Crystal Thomas. Their family grew further when they lovingly welcomed Robert Walker and Stephanie  Thomas into their home. James was a dedicated father who provided for his children not only materially but also through life lessons rooted in hard work and integrity.

James's faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He accepted Christ at an early age at St. Marks Baptist Church in Goochland and remained spiritually grounded throughout his life. In later years he worshipped faithfully at Bethany Baptist Church and continued attending bedside services even as illness took its toll.

Known affectionately as "Turtle," James was a peaceful man with a calm demeanor who carried himself with quiet strength and dignity. His children lovingly nicknamed him "Buck" for his uncanny ability to earn a dollar—an endearing nod to his tireless work ethic. He had an unmistakable million-dollar smile and took pride in being a sharp dresser.

In the community and among friends, James was outgoing and well-known for lending a helping hand wherever it was needed. His hobbies included visiting nostalgic places on long drives, landscaping with care and precision, attending yard sales and tractor pulls, and spending time with friends reminiscing about the good old days.
