Joel Thomas Clarke Senior, affectionately known as "Beetle", was born April 10, 1942, to the late Joel Preston Clarke and Lydia Lacy Clarke in Ashland, Virginia.

Joel became a member of Greenwood Baptist Church at an early age and was baptized into the religious life. He was a member of the men's choir, senior choir and choral Ensemble. He served as a trustee and drove the church bus.

Joel attended Bethany Elementary followed by John M. Gandy middle and High School in Hanover County where he graduated in 1959. He participated in the New Farmers of America program, band, choir and trade programs.

Joel worked at Richfood and Tate's Construction prior to establishing his own roofing, gutter and vinyl siding business, Joel Clarke and Sons, LLC. He served the Virginia, Maryland and DC areas for 55 years with numerous employees serving under his tutelage.

On September 25, 1961, Joel married his life's soulmate, Shirley Mae White. From this union they were blessed with seven children.

Joel entered eternal rest on February 4, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, his parents and siblings; Linwood, Steven, Daniel, and Tracy Clarke. Joel leaves to cherish his devoted memories his children; Sharon (Dennis), Joel Jr (Annette), Daphane (John), Nathan, Tina, Michelle (Paul), Timothy, 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brothers Allen and Carey, sisters June, Brenda, Dale, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
