Josephine Alexander-Starks: A Life Lived With Grace

The world is a little dimmer following the peaceful transition of Josephine Alexander- Starks, a woman whose life was a masterclass in grace in a perfect way. Born on August 21, 1939, in Halifax, North Carolina, to John Alexander and Zettie Branch, Josephine was a cherished anomaly—the youngest of five and the only daughter. Her journey, spanning eight decades, was marked by a quiet strength, a profound capacity for love, and an unshakeable faith that served as a beacon to all who knew her.

Josephine's roots in North Carolina, where she was educated in the Halifax County schools, instilled in her a deep commitment to community and service. This commitment found its truest expression in her vocation as an educator. A proud alumna of Fayetteville State University with a Bachelor's degree in Education, she carried her passion to Richmond, Virginia, where she became a cornerstone of Ginter Park Elementary. For over thirty years, as a beloved 3rd-grade teacher, she did not merely instruct; she raised generations of students. Her classroom was a sanctuary of learning, and her legacy is etched not in stone, but in the countless successful lives she launched with patience, wisdom, and a loving hand.

Her personal life was a tapestry woven with enduring love. She first shared a devoted union with Henry Brailey Sr., which brought forth her greatest joy, her son, Henry Clifford Brailey Jr., whom she loved and adored beyond measure. Later, she found happiness and companionship in a marriage of over twenty years to Fred Jackson, a bond that lasted until his passing. In a final, beautiful chapter, she was blessed with the love of her devoted husband, Benny Starks Sr., with whom she shared a deep and happy marriage until her final day.

Josephine's faith was the bedrock of her existence, a vibrant, active force that defined her service. Starting at Fifth Baptist Church on the usher board, her ministry deepened when she joined Faith Landmark Ministries. For more than two decades, she lived out the Gospel through action, dedicating herself to the prison ministry and bringing light and comfort to residents of nursing homes. Her service was a quiet, powerful testament to her belief, demonstrating that true grace is found in ministering.

She was a soul who understood the necessity of joy and the beauty of the world. A true lover of sunshine, sea, and beaches, Josephine was an intrepid traveler, collecting memories from across the globe, from the serene shores of Hawaii to the sacred ground of Israel (the Holy Land). Yet, she found equal pleasure in the quiet rhythm of home, transforming her yard into a vibrant canvas with her beloved flowers and meticulous landscaping.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, John Alexander and Zettie Branch, and her four brothers, John, James, Julius, and Quention Alexander Sr.

She is survived by her loving son, Henry Clifford Brailey Jr.

She is also survived by a large and loving extended family, including her devoted niece, Janice (Bonnie); nieces Marjorie, Brenda, and Gwen Alexander, Jackie Copeland (O'Neal), and Linda Farrow (Michael); and nephews Darrick, Terrell, and Kermit Alexander. She was preceded in death by her nephews James (Brother) and Quention ("Q") Alexander Jr.

She leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends, including her cherished, devoted friends Ada Alston, Shirley Tabb, and Rose Forbes.

Josephine did not just live; she imparted a lesson on how to live fully, love deeply, and serve selflessly. Her life was a perfectly composed melody of devotion, adventure, and unwavering faith. Though she is absent from the body, her spirit and grace remains a lasting impression on the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
