A Celebration of Life for Katie Mae Houchens

Katie Mae Houchens’s life journey began in Hanover County, Va. on December 31, 1936, born to the late Charlie and Maude Mallory. Her beautiful journey ended peacefully in her sleep at Parham Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Va., her home away from home, on October 5, 2018. She was one of twelve children.

She was educated in Hanover County Public Schools. In 1955, she was married and from this union thirteen children were born including three sets of twins. She was employed at Louisa Shirt Factory and Holly Farms Poultry, and later was a dedicated stay-at-home mom to raise her family.

At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church where she later joined the Senior Ministry. She worshipped there until she became ill. She could always be found sitting in the same seat every Sunday dressed in her Sunday best with her matching hat. Two of her favorite scriptures can be found in the book of Psalms, one of which included the 23rd Psalm. She was faithful and devoted to studying God’s word reading her bible and devotional message from The Daily Bread every day. If you knew her, you knew not to interrupt her bible study time. And if you dined with her, she politely commanded with authority that everyone say grace before eating.

She enjoyed writing and you could find her always capturing dates, times and moments. She always had a sharpie pen nearby and had a unique habit of writing the date on everything she purchased. She wrote a date on every item in her grocery bag before storing them. She captured copious notes on every detail of everything.

In addition to writing, she also loved ironing and was intentional to make sure her outfits were ironed and perfect.

Leaving to cherish her memory are her 11 children: Walter, Gale (Hayes); Charitta; Lorenzo; Glenda; Anthony; Paula (Calvin); Antionette (Wayne); Sharonette (Vincent); Karen (Tyrone) and Darrell (Kim). Other special family members include a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, two sisters-in-law and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two children, John Wayne and Pamela.

I\\'m sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. When someone we love dies, it’s natural to want to see that person again. Many have found comfort in the Bible’s promise of a resurrection.

Notice what John 5:28, 29 says, \\"Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.\\"

God gives us such a meaningful hope to look forward to. And in the meantime he also promises us to comfort us in our trials if we go to him in prayer. 2 Cor 1:3 calls him the God of all comfort.

I hope this was comforting to y\\'all. Please go to for more information. Have a nice day.

Katie and I really connected when she relocated to Montpelier. Subsequently, we became next door neighbors. My mind goes back to when she was learning how to drive and asked me to ride with her. As we traveled at a speed of about 10 miles per hour, the kids complained because everyone was passing us. Katie\\'s response: \\"Shut up and ride\\". I often think about Katie when I pass by her house. She was my passenger for many years on the way to nightly revivals, church meetings, and other events. Family, I encourage you to stay close to each other and be strong in the Lord and rejoice in knowing that Katie is no longer suffering. Carolyn S. Johnson

My loving grandmother. As you know I love you oh so very much. When you died I felt a piece of me leave with you. I miss those late night phone calls we would have with you, my mother and I. In my mind I know you are at peace but a piece of me just wants to hold your hand and hear you say how warm my hands are again. I will miss you so very much and I know I have a angel in heaven. To know that I can still have those late night conversations with you even though you are not here in the flesh helps me be at peace with your passing. Sleep well my angel I know you are in God\\'s hands now.

I was so sorry to hear of the death of Katie Mae. To the family and friends I extend my deepest condolences. It’s never easy losing a love one to death, especially a mother. I hope you can take comfort from the following scriptures during this difficult time: Revelation 21:3-4 (The day will come when death will be a thing of the past. All suffering and pain will be gone). Jehovah’s son Jesus, under his kingdom rulership will swallow up death forever as is prophesied at Isaiah 25:8. He (Jesus) will reunite us with our faithful love ones as he promised at John 5:28-29. Thinking of you all and praying for you.
