Obituary

Kenneth J. Owens "Kenny" departed this earthly life on 8 March 2025.  Number eight of fourteen children, he was born on 27 July 1942 to Richard James and Grace Evelyn Owens, in Cecil County Maryland.

Growing up in Port Deposit, Maryland, Kenny attended Bethel AME Church.  In 1995 he dedicated his life to Christ at Mt. Zion Baptist church where he remained a member.

Educated in Cecil County Schools, Ken joined the United States Army after high school.  He served three years in the Army where his most memorable tour of duty was in Worms, Germany.  He continued his patriotism through his lifetime membership with the American Legion.  Upon leaving the Army, Kenny worked for General Electric in Philadelphia, PA, making circuit breakers from 1966 to 1978.  In 1979, Kenny began working for the Washington Star Newspaper as a Distribution Manager.  When the Washington Star closed, he continued working as a Distribution Manager for the Washington Times. During this time Kenny joined the Federal Government working at the Central In-Processing Facility on Cameron Station in Alexandria, VA.  In 1983, he and his family moved to Heidelberg, Germany where Kenny worked for the 26th Support Group until 1987.   The family returned to the United States in 1987, and Kenny started working for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon where he served as the Night Executive Motor Pool Dispatcher.  It was here that he made sure dignitaries, senators, and generals alike were picked up and transported to various destinations throughout the DMV.  Often, he transported dignitaries himself and was recognized for his dedication to duties.  A hard worker, Kenny received many awards and accolades throughout his career until his retirement in 2002.

It was at General Electric where Kenny met and married the love of his life, Gloria Cray, his wife for 42 years.   To this union, were born Jacquelyn Denise and Kenya Renee.   Wanting the best opportunities and life for his family, Kenny and Gloria began raising their daughters in Willingboro, NJ, where they lived for eight years.  It was Gloria's military career that moved the family to Virginia, then to Germany, and back to Virginia eventually settling in Stafford, Virginia.

Kenny was a lover of music, bowling, fishing, and barbequing.  He is most notably known for his baritone voice.  As a member of the Mt. Zion Male Chorus, he would sing the baritone part in the Temptations rendition of Silent Night.  An advent bowler, Ken bowled in numerous bowling leagues and tournaments and he was the coach of Jaki's and Kenya's  bowling leagues.  The highlight of his bowling was having bowled three perfect 300 games.  A master of the grill, there was not a summer day that went by where Kenny was not on the grill.  He also liked baseball, football, and he was a die-hard Cowboys fan.

Affectionately known as "Jack" among his siblings, nieces and nephews, Kenny was proceeded in death by his parents, his grandson, Nicolas James Van Doren, six brothers and seven sisters.  He leaves to mourn his ex-wife, Gloria Cray of Williamsburg, VA, his daughters Jaki Cunningham (Michael) of Smithfield, VA and Kenya Van Doren of Spotsylvania, VA, a sister, Patricia Weathers (Paul) of Mullica Hill, NJ, four grandchildren:  Nicole Van Doren, Nyle Van Doren, Desiree' Owens, Donivan Cunningham, three great-grandchildren:  Kaiden Randall, Dominic Van Doren, Alayna Van Doren, and a host of nieces, nephews and close family friends.
