Leander George, Jr., 88, of Doswell, VA entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 3, 2019 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Hanover County on September 24, 1931 to the late Ruth Anderson and the late Leander George, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings: one sister, Ella and three brothers, Leroy, Gerald and Harold.
He received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Noel, Virginia. Later in life, he renewed his relationship with the Lord through private fellowship with his nephew, Reverend Arthur Farmer, Sr.
Leander worked as a truck driver for many years. He started his trucking/hauling business, Leander George, Jr. Hauling, after purchasing his first truck by selling the family’s only car with a determination to provide and do better for his family. He was one of the first black men to own a trucking/hauling company in Hanover County. Driving trucks was his passion and he never missed a day of work, getting up as early as 3 a.m. to start his day. He was known to his peer truckers as “Stagga Lee.” He retired from his hauling business at the age of 84. Upon retiring, he found a new passion in his John Deere lawn mower and he kept a pristine yard.
Leander leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Helen, whom he was blessed to share almost 70 years of marriage; one daughter, Dina; five sons, Ricky George (Ferhonda), Ron George (Beverly), Sylvester Green (Linda), Roy Green (Diana), Jeffrey Henderson; one sister, Christine Pleasants; a devoted sister-in-law, Marian Baylor; two devoted brothers-in-law, Russell Pleasants and Milton Pleasants; and, a devoted nephew, Neal Pleasants and his wife, Kathleen. He has eight grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was truly admired and respected by his friends, trucking buddies and the community. These things along with his work ethic and love for his family, he leaves a legacy that will be hard to replace. His hearty chuckle and witty sense of humor will be greatly missed.
