Obituary for Mamie G. Johnson

Mamie Geraldine Johnson “fondly known as Big Mama”, departed this life for eternal rest on September 28, 2019 at the Ashland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Ashland, VA. She was born to the late Ada Jones in Beaverdam, VA on October 17, 1921. She attended Hanover County public schools. Mamie was baptized at Union Baptist Church at an early age, where she accepted the Lord as her Savior and was a member of the Busy Bee Club. She was a faithful member of Union until the decline of her health.

At an early age, Mamie relocated to Philadelphia, PA to do domestic work. She returned from Philadelphia and was joined in holy matrimony to the late Charles C. Johnson Sr. in June of 1942. She received her cosmetology license under Ms. Alice Trotter on March 28, 1950 and from there she moved on to Myrna Mills, which was renamed Louisa Manufacturing, where she worked many years as a seamstress.

Mamie loved telling family stories and attending church services. She enjoyed cooking and was well known for her lemon cakes, which everyone loved. She had a sharp and keen memory and if asked could recall many events from the past. She will always be remembered for her independent spirit, hospitality, and generosity.

Mamie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Johnson Sr., her son Leon G. Johnson and her daughter, Jane A. Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memories three children, Yvonne Cole (Chester) of Suitland, MD, Charles C. Johnson Jr. (Janie) of Riverdale, MD, and Douglas G. Johnson of Mechanicsville, VA; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; a devoted daughter-in-law, Viola Johnson, devoted sister-in-law, Gloria Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
