Obituary for Michael J. Chatmon, Sr.

On Friday, October 18, 2019, the Angel of the Lord gently called his servant Trustee Michael Jerome Chatmon Sr. to enter the joys of the Heavenly kingdom in eternal peace. Michael was born to the late Saxfield Ivory and Emily King Chatmon on March 4, 1957. He was the third of four siblings born to this union. Being a member of a devoted Christian family, Mike attended Canaan Baptist Church and was active in the children’s choir among other youth activities.

Trustee Chatmon was educated in Washington DC’s public schools. Upon graduating from Woodrow Wilson High school in 1975, Mike went on to receive his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of the District of Columbia in 1979. Mike began working as an auditor for the Federal Government in 1981, where he enjoyed many years of employment alongside the management team and many beloved co-workers until his passing.

In 1996, Trustee Chatmon became a member of Canaan Baptist Church and was baptized along with his children by the late Reverend Dr. Cornelius Carter Jr. He was a member of the Men’s Ensemble, Voices of Canaan, Mass Choir, Men’s Fellowship, Trustees, Sacred Performing Arts Ministry, Men of Valor Dance Ministry, SHARE Food Network, Church Treasurer, and former Church School Teacher and Discipleship Training instructor. He knew that when you serve others you are serving God. Mike enjoyed watching football as he was a dedicated Oakland Raiders fan, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He leaves a rich legacy to cherish his memory, including son Michael Jr, and daughter Jocelyn; Mother of his children Linda Gaddy-Chatmon; Grandson Jason Chatmon; siblings Ann Talbert, Albert Chatmon (Lydia), Carolyn, and Carlton (Rhonda); aunts Thelma Daley and Pearl King. They are joined by a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends all of whom were blessed to know and love him.
