Roger Q.
Nelson, Sr.
May 4, 1969 — Aug 9, 2026
Montpelier
Roger Quentin Nelson entered eternal rest on August 9, 2026.
Roger was born on May 4, 1969, to Sylvia Nelson and Roger Nelson. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia, in 1987.
Above all else, Roger loved his family, his friends, and the Lord. He was employed at Central Seeding before his illness and also drove dump trucks for the late Daryl Walker.
Roger took great pride in keeping his yard beautiful and generously cut grass for others in the neighborhood until his health no longer allowed it.
A loving, giving, and caring person, Roger was always willing to lend a helping hand—whether it was putting something together or taking it apart. He loved his music, and so did his neighbors, whether they wanted to or not. Roger enjoyed throwing cornhole and horseshoes and was convinced he was the best in Montpelier. Roger was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.
Known to his friends as "Luke" or "Luke Skywalker," Roger leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Cathy; a son, Roger Nelson Jr.; and a daughter, Janae Nelson; a grandchild, Aniyah Nelson; his mother, Sylvia Nelson; his father, Roger Nelson; one sister, Genevieve (Trista) Nelson; and his grandmother, Juan Morris.
He is also survived by three aunts, Myrtle Nelson Thompson, Sonja King and Carolyn Shaffer; and four uncles, Kenneth Nelson (Della), Douglas Nelson, Gary King, and Clifford King (Fredricka).
Preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Thelma Nelson and Everett "Zookie" Morris; his uncle, Jerome King and his aunt, Sharon Pryor.
Roger was surrounded by a devoted circle of friends: Amiri Rivers, Wallace Pryor, Timothy Deborous, Carlton Rush, Malik Wyatt, Lesley Wyatt (Curley), Garfield Wyatt (Dukie), Steven Johnson (Bo Man), and a devoted friend, Deborah Hicks (Dyer).
A special thank you to Suncrest Hospice and Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute.
