Obituary for Scott L. Otey

Scott L. Otey was born in Richmond Virginia on March 14th, 1942 to Florence Otey and George Raymond Terry.

After high school, Scott enlisted in the United States Navy. During his time in the military, Scott was able to serve his country and travel the world. Scott married the love of his life, Evelyn Ann Braxton in 1961. Scott later attended John Tyler Community College. He was employed at Westvaco, Virginia Folding Box Company until his retirement.

Scott and Evelyn raised four children: son, Scott L. Otey Jr., and daughters, Kimberley, Dionne, and Monica Otey. He also had four grandchildren: Arion, Sade, Ciara, and Preston and one great grandchild Amir.

He was preceded in death by sisters Gloria, Tina, Carolyn, and Gwendolyn Otey and brothers Raymond Jr. (Pep), Eddie (Baby Bruh), and Donald (Duck). Survivors include sisters Florence and Gail Otey and brothers Charles, Jerome (Head), Larry, and Harry Otey. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Affectionately known as “Big Mike” to family and friends, Scott was a lover of the Motown Sound, especially the musical group “The Temptations”. One of the highlights of his later years was getting the opportunity to spend some time with one of the group’s founding members Mr. Otis Williams, talk about the history of Motown, and attend a concert. He spent much of his free time watching sporting events, military and history programs, discussing religion, and philosophizing about life.
