Willie George Smith, affectionately known as " Poochie" departed this earthy life on June 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Willie was born on December 3, 1950, in Ruther Glen, Virginia, to the late Ida Mae Turner Smith and Garland Smith Sr. Throughout his life, he was known by many names. Friends and family lovingly called him "Genghis" or "Gizmo" while his great- nieces and great-nephews affectionately called him "Buddy."
A devoted son, Willie served as a caregiver to his mother, faithfully transporting her to dialysis appointments each week. He was known for his kind heart, joyful spirit, and positive attitude. Despite facing many challenges throughout his life, Willie met each one with strength, determination, and a smile.
Willie was a long-time member of Mount Oni Baptist Church, where he joined at an early age. Though limited in some abilities, he was always willing to serve whenever he could. He attended Union High School and often shared stories of his school days, including the times he would "duck off" from school until his mother, Ida Mae known as "The Whiplash" would bring his adventures to an end.
Willie will be remembered for his basketball skills, his love of music, and his energetic dancing in platform shoes and bell-bottom pants, He enjoyed fishing, hunting with his cousin Wilfred Smith and playing cards with multiple generations of family and friends. He also loved attending the races at Budds Creek with his neighborhood friend, "Dank" George.
Known as the "Midnight Rider," Willie enjoyed long drives with his music turned up loud. He never hesitated to give "the kids" a ride, proudly serving as their unofficial taxi driver. His presence, laughter, and willingness to help others left lasting memories for everyone who knew him.
Willie leaves to cherish his memory; his two loving daughters, Kenyatta Brown and Tashira Burruss; his adoring granddaughter, Quintera Smith; and his beloved great grandson, Don Raegan Meekins. Willie and Raegan shared many memorable moments together, especially enjoying their monster truck collection and coloring activities.
He is survived by his caring sisters, Delores S. Tyler, who lovingly served as his caregiver, and Sheilia Smith, affectionately known as "Frick and Frat." An adopted brother Eugene Higginbotham and he also gained a sister-in-love Christine Smith. Willie was proceeded in death by his brother Garland "Bubba" Smith Jr. and nephew Dupree "Butta" Smith. He leaves behind a loving family of nieces and nephews including Falonda Smith, Dennetta Lewis, Shereece Wright, Katrina Wright, Garland "Landy" Smith lll, and Bobby Wright. He also leaves a host of great-nieces and great nephews who held a special place in his heart. Willie shared a special bond with Thomas "Bigfoot" Glass lll, who originated the nickname "Buddy." He also cherished a longtime friendship with Tracey Jones.
Though Willie has departed from this life, his love, laughter, stories and unforgettable spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His memory will continue to be treasured for generations to come.
